{"id":201,"date":"2017-11-26T20:09:32","date_gmt":"2017-11-26T10:09:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pilens.com.au\/modris\/?page_id=201"},"modified":"2017-11-28T11:25:31","modified_gmt":"2017-11-28T01:25:31","slug":"201-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/pilens.com.au\/modris\/national-film-and-sound-archive\/201-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Adair Scoop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This is part of an interview Series for the National Film and Sound Archive Aural History Programme.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My name is John Fife (<strong>JF<\/strong>) and I have with me Morrie Pilens (<strong>MP<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>JF:\u00a0 In that old newsroom, you were saying before that the cameramen were the people who went out and really drove the story in the early days.\u00a0 I guess that changed when the journos, when sound came in.<\/p>\n<p>MP:\u00a0 When the sound came in the whole thing changed completely.\u00a0 All of a sudden there was the one that was going to talk, to stand up, comes out with the cameraman and starts telling him what shots to take and what have you.<\/p>\n<p>JF:\u00a0 Also I\u2019m thinking that the style of the story would change because all of a sudden you\u2019re able to door stop talent as well.<\/p>\n<p>MP:\u00a0 Oh yes yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s all of a sudden changed.\u00a0 Where we were able to walk in on people, or have the interview on the run\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Bass Strait Oil fire, one of the platforms was burning.\u00a0 There was a guy called Red Adair who was an international oil fireman.\u00a0 Internationally known, so they called him out to help stamp out this bloody oil fire.\u00a0 So we\u2019re all up at Langford waiting for him to arrive, in a room all set up for a press conference.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got the Pro 600 there, we\u2019re waiting for him to come and do an interview\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I had Cyril Jones with me and I said \u2018Listen, come with me I\u2019ll just go outside, across to the helipad because I want some silent footage of him arriving.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>And he said \u2018Oh no, we\u2019ll miss it in here.\u00a0 We\u2019d never get back here in time.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s only about 200 metres and I said \u2018No, come on.\u2019\u00a0 \u00a0So finally he comes with me, and a week before I had bought a cassette tape recorder and I\u2019d been playing with it.<\/p>\n<p>As we arrived there I said to Cyril \u2018Do you want to try this?\u00a0 When he comes out of the helicopter, which is where the shed is there \u2013 the car is in here waiting for him.\u00a0 When he comes out of the helicopter, press those two buttons.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Yeah, okay.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018And hold the microphone in front of him.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Helicopter arrives, Red Adair comes out, Cyril switches it on, walks back with him to the car, talking with him for a minute, minute and a half \u2013 full length of the walk.\u00a0 He hops in the car, shuts the door, SHOOM!\u00a0 Shuts the door SHOOM! and off they go.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t go to the press conference!\u00a0 Just pissed off to Melbourne!<\/p>\n<p>Laughter<\/p>\n<p>So, not only have we got the only pictures of him arriving, we\u2019ve also got a sound interview!\u00a0 So we sent *this back from Sale with a note of explanation, to Stan Harder?\u00a0 And I can just about hear the bloody growling, but he had two sync points.\u00a0 The back doors shutting.\u00a0 So he synced the tape back from those doors shutting with the pictures, back to the helicopter arriving.\u00a0 And we had a bloody sound interview!<\/p>\n<p>Sound and film.\u00a0 A minute air, from the helicopter walking to the car.\u00a0 Do you think the shit hit the fan?\u00a0 Channel 9 guy got the sack!<\/p>\n<p>JF:\u00a0 Yeah?<\/p>\n<p>MP:\u00a0 Channel 9 reporter got the sack for that.\u00a0 I can\u2019t even think of his name.\u00a0 Sorrell (John) (for 9) was bloody ropable.\u00a0 \u2018Who was that bloody cameraman?&#8230; Bill?&#8230; Sack him!\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is part of an interview Series for the National Film and Sound Archive Aural History Programme.\u00a0 My name is John Fife (JF) and I have with me Morrie Pilens (MP).
