My name is John Fife (JF<\/strong>) and I have with me Morrie Pilens (MP<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

JF:\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about some of that equipment \u2013 it\u2019s all been changed and made quite a difference to the way news is covered I\u2019d imagine, so we\u2019ll talk about that in a while.\u00a0\u00a0 Were you there when the Beatles came to Australia?<\/p>\n

MP:\u00a0 Mmm.\u00a0 Yeah, I was covering the Beatles from their arrival.\u00a0 I actually had the drummer sitting in Essendon after he got sent back to England and Ringo Starr arrived here.<\/p>\n

JF:\u00a0 How did you get there?\u00a0 Were you tipped off that he was there?<\/p>\n

“It is one of the most poignant rock and roll photos of all time.\u00a0<\/em>Jimmy Nicol, the stand-in drummer for Ringo Starr at the start of The Beatles\u2019 1964 world tour, sitting all alone at the departure lounge at Essendon Airport, waiting for his flight home to England.” <\/em><\/strong>– Craig Cook, Adelaide Advertiser 11-June-2014<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

MP:\u00a0 No, we knew that he was going so nobody else was interested in him because everybody was interested in the Beatles.\u00a0 So I just went up to Essendon and got a couple of feet of him sitting there.\u00a0 Silent footage.\u00a0 Very interesting.<\/p>\n

You could say that because when I first came to Melbourne from Tasmania, I worked at Electrolux which is a factory building vacuum cleaners.\u00a0 And the production manager of the department I was working in *was Dick Lean?\u00a0 Dick Lean was the owner of Festival Hall.\u00a0 So when the Beatles arrived \u2013 at that time I\u2019d already been working with the camera \u2013 we applied for access to Beatles.<\/p>\n

So Dick says \u2018Oh, Morrie.\u00a0 Oh yeah no worries, let him come, that\u2019s fine you know.\u00a0 Except that he can\u2019t shoot anything more than about 3 minutes for copyright, you know.\u00a0 But it\u2019s okay, it\u2019s fine with me.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 Because they never actually filming it for themselves, for release or what have you, so basically 3 minute, 4 minute grabs of Beatles everywhere.\u00a0 On the stage, with the girls screaming and panting and lining the street outside, you know.\u00a0 It was quite an interesting little thing.<\/p>\n

JF:\u00a0 That was really the first time we\u2019d seen a bit of hysteria in Melbourne for pop stars \u2013 would it have been?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
